Recently I have assigned my students to read the bestseller---" Who Moves My Cheese?" Here cheese is a metaphor for what you want in life - be it a good job, a loving relationship, money or possessions. And the maze is where you look for what you want - your organization, family or community. Most people are fearful of change because they don't believe they have any control over how or when it happens to them. Since change happens either to the individual or by the individual, By telling us the story of how four different characters face the change, Spencer Johnson shows us that what matters most is the attitude we have about change, and helps us to anticipate change, adapt quickly, enjoy change, and be ready for more. So change can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. The message of Who Moved My Cheese? is that all can come to see it as a blessing, if they understand the nature of cheese and the role it plays in their lives. After reading the story, the students have been divided into groups and have had a discussion, followed by a class oral presentation. The following are some of their presentations.

A Discussion of Our Own
We've already learned some something from the story, but how can we apply this to our own situation and what our cheese really is? The first thing that comes to my mind is the NMET, which is to be held in a few days. As soon as it is finished, we will be Senior 3 students.
For me it is really a big challenge, because being in Senior 3 means not only to be burdened with heavy homework, endless tasks, but also great pressure and firece competition. We will not be able to do what we really like to and live a cozy life just as we used to. That means a total change of our life.
In face of the challenge, I act like Haw. The time to enter Senior 3 is approaching, but I just don't want to see it and do not feel like making changes to get prepared. When passing the classrooms of Senior 3, I felt frightened and wished that the day would never come. However, what is to happen is sure to take place. You might be able to avoid facing it, but you can enver prevent it from happening. And I realized that if I don't change, I will becomy extinct just like Hem. Then why can't I face it and act as a person who are not afraid. Just enjoy the process even at the tough time.
Keeping this attitude is very important. Because in Senior 3 we may face even more challenges than we expect. If we just hem and haw, we may get lost in dark corners and blind alleys and can enver find our cheese again.
Life moves on and so should we. From now on we should never try to escape the problems. we have to face them. The cheese is right there, waiting for us.

Who Moved My Cheese?
I',m acting like Sniff. Yes, in most cases, I act like Sniff. You know, not everyone like change, nor do I. But I think I'm a Sniff. Many times I can smell the flavour of change in the air. After that I begin to think what would happen. Although I can't take everything into consideration, I try my best to imagine all kinds situation in my mind, so that I am not easy to get surprised. Maybe it makes me a little bit complicated, but I really enjoy my way of acting Sniff. I don't like surprising things come to me. I usually want to know what will happen before it really happens. I can be a good actor and make others believe that I am really surprised. Actually I know much more things than you think I should and could know.
Also I act like Scurry. Because sometimes I have no choice. As I said above, I can't take everything into consideration, so there are still something beyong my expectation. In that case if I insist on being a Sniff, I may fail, so I have to move with the change. There is a motto of mine, which says," If you cna't handle the situation, change with the change immediately. Don't be hesitate.
(The above is taken from the first part of his speech.)
3. By Jiang Nan
When something has happened, many of us may try hard to avoid it. And not until we have tried all what we can do and find that it's impossible to go back to the old situation will we begin to think of changing ourselves at adapting to the new situation. but it usually takes a long time. When we realize what we should do, we may have already missed a lot. In the story, the two mice can make a desision and take action immediately because they are not so smart. In their eyes, the world is simple. There's cheese, so they stay thre. But when the cheese is moved, it is certain that they should move too. But to the two little people, things are not so simple. They would think why the cheese is moved, who moved it and whether it will be put back. Just like what we do in our daily life. When we lose something, we will look back on it and try every means to find it back. It is understandable, but we forget that something better may be waiting for us. But we are wasting too much time and are going to miss it. So sometimes we should learn from the two mice. Don't think too much and don't hesitate for too long. We should be brave and get ready to change. And as we are smart people, we should sense the change earlier than mice and prepare for it. We can also take action earlier to control the situation and avoid what we don't like if we can. so we can always try to take the initiative step instead of waiting for the chance and being passive all the time.
( The above are just some of the speeches delivered by the students in classroom discussion.) |
